Forensic Expert Witness Services
Level 3 Inspection LLC is an ISO 9000:2008, AS9100 Revision B, AAAM 44.9-2010 certified inspection, design and process engineering firm. Our services are centered on a rigorous computer-aided inspection (CAI) methodology, pioneered in part by our founders, that has revolutionized several of our client precision manufacturing industries. We offer a range of CAI options, Product Modernization™, and problem solving services. More recently, we’ve gained attention for the innovative automated inspection systems offered through our solutions division, Smart Inspection Systems LLC.
To our services portfolio, we at L3I are proud to announce the addition of our Forensic Expert Witness (FEW) capabilities. Led by Bill Greene as CEO and Engineer, and supported by our experienced staff, with significant credentials in dimensional quality inspection, we stand ready to provide accurate, neutral and objective information to litigants.
Why do parts fail? Over the past few decades, as manufactured components and assemblies (such as turbine engines, industrial machinery, orthopedic implants and medical devices) have become more sophisticated and mechanically complex, dimensional precision has become more critical. During and after the manufacturing processes the conformance to design definition and production tolerances can be evaluated, while in use and even after the moment of failure, traces of geometric evidence are often left on part surfaces in the form of scratches and minor deformations. Full digitization of part geometry presents dimensional anomalies in vivid detail. It's also possible to establish trends of uneven wear by combining geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) with sophisticated statistical analysis.
As exceptionally adept practitioners of modern 21st Century inspection and analysis, the L3I team can measure, evaluate and describe the geometry of any machined, molded or cast part. Our conclusions are singularly persuasive and reliable on account of the breadth and depth of information – our measurements are accurate, our supporting evidence is thorough, and our explanations are clear. We report comprehensive part geometry in terms of millions of data points accurate to ±0.000040” (40 one-millionths of an inch).
Drawing on years of experience in public speaking and professional communication, we are very capable of communicating technical information to individuals without a technical background. We’ll thoroughly but concisely explain the modern technology we used for analysis, and then present the information in a clear and intuitive way. The scope of information can range from simple numerical dimensions to full visual illustrations (which help with non-technical people and technicians alike). Depending on your needs, we’ll either report dimensions against the blueprint, or compare an actual part to the CAD model with an interactive color plot. We can even explain intricate statistical comparisons of part-to-part geometries in layperson’s terms as needed.
Finally, we’ll thoroughly report our findings, with an engineering assessment and careful review of the manufacturing process. Our decades of collective experience in measuring and analyzing precision parts and assemblies lend credibility to our conclusions about product quality, performance issues, and liability/fault assessment. Relying on our background in CNC machining, injection molding and investment casting, we can help to determine the root causes of failures and non-conformances.
Regardless of size and scope, your case needs the combination of scientific rigor, engineering expertise, cutting edge technology and expert testimony that L3I can offer. Call us today at 561.775.7911 to discuss the capabilities we can deliver for your case and need.
